“and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.”
Romans 5:5
We live by hope, I’d argue. The way our bodies need breath, our souls need hope. Have you seen a hopeless person? Or maybe you have been there yourself. Without hope, despair and cynicism set in, and life may not seem worth the living.
Hope needs to be placed in something. Sometimes, even while we sing “In Christ alone, my hope is found”, we leave our hope in other places. We hope in education, jobs, and people. Sometimes we don’t notice even, where we’ve left that hope, until it sprouts, and takes root, and only when it’s crushed, we realize that we’ve been hoping in other things than God.
When you realize that something you’ve been hoping for, expecting, for months, or maybe years, is not likely to happen, that is the best time to bring your hope to God again. You’ll see the difference right away, hope placed in something that strong and stable, will bring a lasting peace, instead of anxious anticipation of hope placed in smaller, passing things.
So next time you find yourself facing a disappointment of some sort, whether big or small, turn to the Father. You’ll find a peace, and strength to carry on in any situation.
