M A T T H E W 5 : 19 – 20
“AND HE SAID TO THEM, “FOLLOW ME, AND I WILL MAKE YOU FISHERS OF MEN.” IMMEDIATELY THEY LEFT THEIR NETS AND FOLLOWED HIM.”
Lately, I have been wondering how easily Matthew and the others could just leave whatever they were doing, to follow this Man that just came up to them and told them to come with Him. They were laboring on a boat, casting out nets to catch fish with coworkers and friends, and they decided to leave all that at the tip of a hat. They didn’t look back; they didn’t grab their nets or wait for the next haul of fish.
How could they drop everything so easily? That’s when I realized they were waiting for something exactly like this to happen. In that one sentence, Jesus tells them not only what to do, but He gives them a purpose to their life, making them fishers of men.
They have been casting out nets for who knows how long, every single day the same mundane, and overdone routine. Was there anything more to life than just mending nets, and catching fish? Is there anything more to your life, than to just wake up, go to school or work, and repeat the same day?
Deep down they knew that there was something more to life. They needed that call, that call that goes to all men, and it all depends on us whether or not we will answer it and follow Christ the Savior of all mankind. Are you waiting for something to happen? Are you looking for something more, more than work or school, more than relationships or marriage, are you looking for something real and fulfilling?
For those of you who are in this position right now, just waiting for something to happen, to be the answer to the deep hole in your life that can’t seem to be filled by anything,
He says to you today: “Follow me”.
